For my graduation project, I chose to explore the notion of
testimony.
Testimony is defined as the declaration of what one
has experienced as an individual, in a subjective and unique
way. The most common form of testimony is oral, textual or
iconographic. The impression is created that the story is frozen
in a bygone era, and no longer exists at the present moment
when we read it. How can we avoid freezing the story, and
make it more real? How can we rethink the role of the "receiver"?
Is the receiver obliged to keep a distance from the
testimony, to remain passive to a story that doesn't belong to
him or her?
The aim was, with my grandfather, to create reminiscences
of photos taken on the spot, which could never be revealed
because his suitcase was stolen on the way back to France.
He sent me one text per photo, and I proposed one object per
text, trying to evoke his memory without betraying his word as
a witness.
